First: Confirm You Actually Have a Pest (30-Second Check)

That means the top of a leaf can look fine while the real problem sits underneath.

Honeydew is the shortcut. Honeydew is the sticky, shiny residue sap-feeding pests leave behind, and it often grows a black film called sooty mold. If your leaves or the pot are sticky, you're looking at mealybugs or scale—not spider mites, which don't produce it.
